What’s in a name?
It was past midnight, one blustery and cold night in February 2012, the stars our only source of light. We were gathered around the courtyard, waiting for the workers to finish up the last pouring of cement, when suddenly, a “duhat’ fruit (java plum) randomly hit our young son, Juan, which took us all by surprise!
As we were explaining to him what it was, the value of the duhat tree in the middle of the courtyard dawned on us, calling us out to name the place after it.
And so, our story began.
Duhat is a Tagalog word, widely used in the island of Luzon, Philippines, translated as Java Plum” in English. It’s also known widely as “Lomboy” in the islands of the Visayas and Mindanao. The “duhat” fruit or “lomboy” is oval and roughly 1 to 2 centimeters in length. One of its most notable features is the color purple or black.
The fruit is also known to be fleshy and one-seed with a dash of sweet-astringent taste. Commonly, Filipinos enjoy eating this fruit with rock salt.
